Claude Code plugins without a version number

When neither plugin.json nor the marketplace listing has a version, Claude Code uses the first 12 characters of the commit SHA as the version. The docs also say: leave out the version if you want to deliver updates per commit instead of pinning one. So leaving it out is not an oversight. It is a documented option: the commit itself is the version.

44 of the 315 Claude Code plugins on the official marketplace take this form. On this site, the "Version" field of these plugins stays empty, and this page lists them with the reason. The list is updated automatically every day.

Why there is no version number

Claude Code decides a plugin's version in this order (official docs, "How Claude Code computes the version").

  1. The version field in the plugin's manifest (plugin.json)
  2. The version field in the plugin's marketplace entry (marketplace.json)
  3. When neither is set, a value derived from the source type: for plugins that point at a GitHub repository, the commit SHA shortened to 12 characters; for folders inside the official repository, the commit SHA of that folder

When neither plugin.json nor the marketplace listing has a version, Claude Code treats the commit the plugin points to as the unit of update. This is a documented option in the official Claude Code docs. The docs advise leaving the version out of both the manifest and the entry to let users track commits, and explain the opposite case: a manifest that pins a version keeps every user on the cached copy until its author changes the string, however many commits they push.

The official marketplace pins every externally hosted plugin to a commit SHA. So for a plugin without a number, new content reaches users when Anthropic moves that pin to a newer commit.

How this site handles them

  • Version field: left empty when nothing is written. We never fill in a guessed number such as a commit SHA or a tag.
  • Changelog: "Updated version" entries appear only for plugins that state a version. For plugins without one, moving the pinned commit does not produce a changelog entry. Each plugin page shows when the source last changed under "Source (GitHub) last updated".
  • This list: refreshed automatically by the daily check. The grouping follows mechanical rules, with no human judgement, and does not rank plugins without a number below those with one.

Plugins in the plugins/ folder of the official repository anthropics/claude-plugins-official. Its README describes that folder as internal plugins developed and maintained by Anthropic. The unit of update is a commit to the official repository.

Numbered in the author's own listing (5)

The author's repository has its own marketplace.json with an entry of the same name, and that entry states a version. The official marketplace entry does not carry it, so Claude Code does not show it. We show the author's number for reference.

Numbered by Git tags (7)

The author's repository has Git tags (release numbers). Tags belong to the whole repository, so a tag may number a different product in the same repository rather than the plugin. We show a tag name for reference only when a tag sits exactly on the commit the official marketplace pins; otherwise we link to the repository's tag list.

MCP server connection settings only (11)

The plugin folder contains only the MCP server connection settings (.mcp.json), the manifest, a README and a LICENSE. Updates happen on the other side of the connection (a hosted MCP server, an npm package, a Docker image), so a number on the plugin itself would mean little.
